thank you for joining us. steve is right. i am enjoying the weather but we need some rain. >> february does not look good. >> not for the ski resorts too. >> yeah. january was dry. february hasn't been much better. we do get nice weather though. after the coastal fog and inland fog burns off, a lot of sunshine. highs low to mid 60s. here is sal. good morning. traffic is on highway 4 is getting busier. especially on highway 4 in antioch. also looking at the commute here if you are driving on 80 westbound you will see some slow traffic. now let's go back to the desk. we are following breaking news from contra costa county this morning. a police officer and a suspect have been wounded in a gun battle exchange in pittsburg. it happened late last night near east 11th street. investigators say the gun battle began after the suspect shot and wounded the police officer. officers then returned fire. now the wounded officer was treated and released from the

hospital. he's said to be doing well. the suspect is in stable condition at the hospital. >> our suspect is a 30-year-old oakley resident with extensive criminal history. for weapons and drug related charges. he was also wanted on several warrants for the same charges. >> ktvu tara moriarty is there at the shooting scene getting new information right now. she will have a live update from pittsburg at 6:30. time is 6:02. we have developing news in santa clara. in two hours a bomb squad will go back to the house where explosives were found yesterday. this is a block away from santa clara high school. janine de la vega live outside the house. so what is going on there now? >> reporter: well, under cover officers are here and they have been guarding this house all night. crime tape surrounds this property. inside officers found explosives. the reason you see the sandbags is because they detonated a bomb in the front yard. that is why sandbags are scattered on the lawn. they used them to block debris

that went flying everywhere. chp officers tell us they have been watching the man that lives in this house. they identified him as everett basham who is in his mid 40s. they arrested him yesterday in sunny veil for -- sunnyvale for making a public threat against a public official. officers found a home made bomb and bomb making materials insiden president bomb squad and swat team were called in and they dug a hole in the front yard, buried the material they found, covered it up with the sandbags so it could detonate safely. >> earlier today the houses were evacuated and we had some shelter in place until everything was rendered safe. >> reporter: there are numerous surveillance cameras throughout his home and radio and microwave antennas. it's unknown why he had all this equipment.

this neighborhood is near kiley boulevard. it's a middle class neighborhood with well kept lawns. we plan on talking to neighbors to find out what they knew about basham. there could be nor explosives inside. we are told the bomb squad is supposed to come out here when it turns daylight at 8:00 a.m.. we'll keep you posted. reporting live from santa clara janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. the week long man hunt for accused killer christopher dorner has come to a firey end. police say they surrounded the fugitive in a cabin in big bear. brian flores has the intense final hours of this man hunt. >> reporter: what we do know there was a charred body inside the cabin that caught fire. several law enforcement officials say it is dorner based on his latest whereabouts. authorities believe a single

shot was heard before the cabin was engulfed in flames. before then an intense gun battle took place. take a listen. >> reporter: this morning authorities believe it could take days or weeks for police to positively identify the remains found inside that charred cabin. before the gun battle dorner carjacked somebody work at a nearby boy scout camp. >> he said i don't want to hurt you. just get out and start walking up the road and take your dog with you. he was calm. i was calm. i would say i was in fear for my life, but there was no panic. he told me what to do and i did it. >> reporter: that was rick heltebrake that was working at a nearby boy scout camp. he said dorner emerged from the foods and pointed a rifle at him. dorner also opened fire on fish

and wildlife wardens and at sheriffs deputies. one officer was killed and another wounded in the gun battle. they eventually surrounded don earn in the cab -- surrounded dorner in the cabin. they heard one gunshot before the cabin caught fire. live in the newsroom i'm brian flores. >> one of the people killed by dorner will be laid to rest today. he was shot and killed last thursday. he leaves behind a wife and two children and thousands of people are expected to attend today's funeral including governor jerry brown. stay with us here at ktvu news and online at ktvu.com for continuing coverage. we will have updates on this investigation throughout the morning and throughout the day. time is 6:06. in just about hoe three hour --

in just about three hours from now barry bonds is due back in the courtroom. he will ask the federal appeals court will throw out the obstruction of justice charge. claudine wong is looking a the the court documents tied to the hearing. >> reporter: dave, any time you have barry bonds in court, there is a lot of attention on this. let me give you an idea how this will go down. we are in front of one of the public entrances to this courthouse. but there will be cameras on either side of this building. everyone tries to get a glimpse of the former slugger before he heads into court. this is not expected to be a long hearing but the court was only to a small number of journalists. ktvu will be in there. there will be a camera allowed inside. and at issue inside will be barry bonds obstruction of justice conviction. he was convicted back in 2011. it all centered around grand jury testimony from 2003. during an investigation into

balco. company accused of distributing performance enhancing drugs. we've been looking at the filings this morning. the government basically saying that bonds quote obstructed justice when he sought again and again to avoid answering questions about injections about these topics. now bonds' attorney however say this is all about what they call statement c. a portion of testimony given by bonds in which he was asked about his childhood friendnderson -- childhood friend anderson. they write in filings rambling about being a celebrity child was not a crime. it was not factually false. it was not a refusal to answer a question. it did nothing to aped the function of the grand jury. now a three-judge panel will be inside listening to the arguments today. arguments will last about 30

very similar pattern of yesterday. after that fog burns off. lots of sunshine. temperatures 60 for many. today san francisco yesterday was 60. i carried it over into today as well. 60-degrees will be on the high side. 56 add the noon hour. 30s and 40s. it's not changing much here. the wind dirtion still a little component. at least inland offshore sfo had a little westerly breeze. that will probably lose ground. clear skies. temperatures continue be near average. upper 60s for some. upper 50s for others. a little closer to the beaches. might be a little on the cooler side. inland temperatures continue to warm up ever so slowly. but they have pretty good about low to mid 60s for almost everybody. upper 50s to low to mid 60s for

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news at 6:14. we are following over night news from the east bay. police are investigating a high speed crash that ended early this morning. it started in antioch, ended in pittsburg. three people were in a stolen car going 100 miles an hour when it crashed at the harper street off ramp. those three people suffered minor injuries. the 32-year-old female driver is now behind bars. >> the suspect has a history. i don't have a full criminal history in front of me right now. she has a history of auto theft and warrants for her arrest. i'm not sure what they are right now. >> the woman was wearing a wig. police say they were forced to shoot and kill two violent pit bulls at a home in richmond. that happened yesterday afternoon on monterey street.

the police officers say they came to the richmond home to serve a search warrant when the dogs attacked them. police opened fire and killed the dogs. the officer was treated for several dog bites but was not seriously hurt. time is 6:15. and in his state of the union address president obama promised to invest in the middle class. as kyla campbell reports the president called on congress to get on board and cake action to get americans back to work. kyla. >> reporter: dave, several democratic congressmen tell me they back president obama's idea to invest in jobs. president obama aimed at republicans when he said deficit reduction alone is not an economic plan. he says lawmakers on both sides of the aisle need to be on board with investing in jobs. especially for the country's infrastructure. president obama says those middle class jobs are long-term and sustainable. another injure he wants to invest money in is education. he talked about getting kids a head start on education with

crest more elementary school facing a threat of closure. the superintendent is recommending closing crestmoor by june 30th. if effected the students would be moved to rolling wood elementary. they say that closing the school would save about $200,000 a year. last year the district recommended closing crestmoor but kept it open after the public spoke out. this spring a big event in the cycling world will have its dramatic finish in the bay area for the very first time. how local businesses plan to celebrate and cash in on the amjan tour. 6:18 is the time. sal, hopefully traffic is not too exciting. >> we want it to be nice and boring. like some of my parties. >> welsh you know.

companies have avoided paying taxes. analysis by investigative reporting says companies such as apple, google, e-bay and hewlett packard are able to reduce their packages by billions of dollars by sheltering their assets overseas. analysis found instead of paying the corporate tax rate of 35% many large silicon valley companies pay less than 15%. time is 6:25. the largest pro cycling stage in america amgen will finish here in the bay area this year. state six is a time trial in san jose. it's set for may 17. stage 7 runs from livermore to mt. diablo. this is the first time the tour will start in southern california and end here in the bay area. some residents of danville say they are planning a block

contra costa county. a police officer and a suspect have both been shot and wounded in a late night gun battle in pittsburg. ktvu tara moriarty is right there. the police are releasing new information about the suspected gunman. tara. >> reporter: yes. and the officer is a five-year veteran of the force. he is doing extremely well. he is at the police station after having been to the hospital. meanwhile investigators are still here on the scene. we are at santa fe and maple streets where around 11:30 last night gunfire erupted and two officers approached the suspect. when he saw them he ran off and then turned fired his gun and striking one of the officers. the officers returned fire and struck the suspect. the suspect is expected to survive. he is a 30-year-old oakley man with extensive record on drug and weapons charges. investigators have secured the crime scene. they will come through it again once the sun comes up. >> we have an extensive crime

scene. one thing i look at is how many shots were fired. we have evidence over there. it's an active crime scene that in sense there is a lot of evidence there. and we're going to take our time to make sure every item we need to collect is collected. >> reporter: emergency crews were performing cpr on the suspect but his condition has stabilized and he is expected to survive. we understand there were other people with the suspect who were detained and being interviewed. the wounded officer is on paid administrative leave for the next few days as is the other officer involved who has been with the department for seven years. if we learn the identity of the suspect, we will of course pass it say long to you. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. we have new video from outside the home of christopher dorner's mother. police went to that house late last night. brian flores is in our newsroom with over night developments in this case. >> reporter: what we do know for sure is that there was a charred body inside the cabin that caught on fire in big

bear. however, several law enforcement agencies still say it could take weeks to positively identify the body. meantime we have just new video that has come into the newsroom. investigators last night going into the home of dorner's mother in northern orange county. last week investigators also went there to look for evidence. during one search, they left with about 10 paper bags of items but didn't say what was in the bags. meanwhile, just moments before the cabin in big bear caught on fire there was an intense gun battle between dorner an law enforcement officers take a listen. [ sound of gunfire ] >> the l.a. times also reports dorner also tied up two maids that were inside cleaning a cabin that dorner broke into. dorner broke off in their pup l nee -- purple nissan. he crashed that car and stole another car.

>> saw some movement in the trees. it was christopher dorner. and he came out on to the road out of the snow and he pointed his big rifle at me in my truck. i stopped. put my truck in park. put my hands up. >> reporter: he says that dorner emerged from the woods and pointed a rifle at him but said he was relatively calm. dorner also reportedly opened fire on fish and wildlife wardens and later san bernardino sheriffs deputies. one officer was killed and another wounded in the gun battle. at this hour it's still unclear how the cabin caught on fire but we are expecting a news conference around 8:00 this morning with the latest. live in the newsroom i'm brian flores. los angeles police have spent countless hours over the past week investigating one of their own. coming up at 6:42 a live report

from the los angeles police headquarters to hear more about the final hours of the largest man hunts in state history. time now 6:34. over night news more than 100 workers were evacuated last night because of a that moineau- - a ammonia leak. there was a ammonia leak inside a refrigeration unit. 150 employees were evacuated. that hazmat situation lasted three hours. firefighters say no one was hurt. highway patrol officers are investigating reports of shots fired on a car in dublin. you can see three bullet holes on the rear passenger door of an suv. the driver told police that one started shooting while he was exiting westbound 580 and highway 84 about 10:00 last night. he pulled over into a shopping center at dublin boulevard. one person was take ton the hospital but we don't know the extent of their injuries.

new this morning pope benedict made his first public appearance since announcing he is stepping down as leader of the catholic church. the pope received a standing ovation as he entered a packed chapel to celebrate ash wednesday. he told the congregation he is stepping down for the good of the church. ash wednesday marks the beginning of lent. the church plans to have a new pope in place by easter which isth end of -- easter which is the end of lent. barry bonds is due back in a courtroom in a few hours. he will ask the federal appeals court to throw out his charges. claudine wong is looking at the court documents this morning. >> reporter: pam, we are in front of the ninth circuit cut of appeals where this hearing will take place. barry bonds expected to arrive during our morning show. we are keeping an eye out for that. he is of course hoping to get

this obstruction of justice charge dismissed. we'll also talk about the arguments from both sides. this has been a ten-year journey leading us here. it comes down to testimony bonds gave the jury back in 2003. about falco. bonds was asked several questions and many focused on his relationship with one person. his childhood friend greg anderson. greg anderson has faced several stints behind bars to refusing to cooperate with the investigation into bonds. the government says it's during questions with anderson that bonds obstructed justice about not answering questions. bonds' attorney says say this is all about one portion of the testimony in statement c. in which he was asked about anderson and talked about being a celebrity child.

his attorney argues rambling about being a celebrity child was not a crime. it was not factually false. it was not refusal to answer a question and it did nothing to impede the function of the grand jury. again, this hearing starts at 9:00 this morning. they've allotted about half an hour for the testimony. we expect it to be a packed house as the meeting descends on the courthouse as they do. we are not expecting a decision today. we expect that ruling to come at a later time. live in san francisco claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:38. let's go over to sal. you are watching everything. you've been busy. you came in busy. >> that is right. we've had a lot to talk about. although things have been settling down. steve talked about patchy fog. let me show you something. here it is. when we first got here the east shore freeway you can see all the way up to the golden gate fields freeway. you can see the patchy fog.

that patchy fog may impair some of your visibility. no problems on the bridge. 20 minutes is routine this time in the morning. i want to mention livermore valley we have slow traffic here as we drive from grant line to 680. 40 minutes already. most of that traffic slow on the altamont pas. as you move over to the fremont area. southbound 680 is slow because of earlier troubles. let's go to steve. sal, you are correct. there wasn't any fog there an hour ago. some of that is rather thick. you can see it increasing. doesn't do it justice here. there is a little bit more than that. i just sent out on twitter satellite picture showing more

coverage on that fog. it will burn off. the normal high for this time of year 60 degrees. they were that yesterday. they are going that today. and we'll be really close to that. tomorrow we'll go above. patchy fog. a lot of sun. temperatures very, very close to what we had yesterday. upper 50s low to mid 60s. everything says high pressure is just hanging out here. not going anywhere any time soon. cold inland. 30s for some. even 30s closer to the coast. very dry pattern here. january and it looks like most of february as well. the long range isn't promises for rain. it's promising for colder air next week. today and tomorrow into friday. temperatures will be warming up. some of that morning fog though. just be careful of that. upper 50s. upper 60s. clearlake 68. novato 63. sonoma 64. a lot of 63s in there for walnut creek, pittsburg, antioch 61.

to do a dna analysis. >> law enforcement agencies and the brotherhood. so this is a very difficult day. again for law enforcement. authorities say dorner spent hours hold up in a remote cabin. with the areas surrounded police ignited smoke devices. >> i can tell you for the week this thing has been going on, there was very little normal police work that was going on. every police officer involved had their head on a swivel. constantly you know just relentless pressure. just looking around. >> reporter: investigators say dorner was out to avenge his firing from the los angeles police force by targeting officers and their family. on february 3rd he gunned down the daughter of an officer

minutes ago. >> reporter: the chp spokesperson told me what led them to this house is they are claiming the man that lived here made a threat against an elected state official. now the chp officer that is starting to show up here now that it is daylight to they can continue their investigation. they have this home blocked off with crime tape. the front beyond a reasonable doubt is in complete disarray. last night law enforcement officers found explosives and explosive materials in here and they used those sandbags to cover that explosive material so they could detonate that material safely. now we are told that the chp threat assessment team out of sacramento has been watching the man that lived at that home for awhile and got a search warrant for his home. when officers came here yesterday, they found what appeared to be a home made bomb and bomb making materials as well as hazardous chemicals inside the property. the bomb squad dug a hole in the yard.

buried the material and detonated it. people in the neighborhood had to evacuate. others were told to shelter in place. the chp believes more evidence possibly more explosive materials are in inside. >> because we haven't been able to search the whole house and there is a lot of items in the house, until you turn everything record over -- everything over you will not know what is in there. it's a systematic go through in the home. >> reporter: there are numerous surveillance cameras seen throughout the property and radio and microwave antennas on the house. it's unclear why the man had this on his home. the residents from the neighborhood were able to go back into their houses late last night. they could be evacuated again when the bomb squad returns if they deem that is necessary for safety reasons. the chp has arrested everett bash a the man that lives at the home yesterday morning before they found all the explosives for making threats to that public elected

welcome back. time now 6:56. uc santa cruz student who was shot in the head at a bus stop is expected to fully recover. it's a 21-year-old woman. she was ataked monday -- attacked monday night at that bus stop. police say a man pointed a rifle demanded everything she had. she was hit in the back of the head by what she thought was a butt of the rifle but it was really a bullet. >> he was amazing. she was able to keep her whits about her. she was able to pay attention to her surroundings. fight to survive through this ordeal as well as get help. >> doctors at the dominican hospital successfully removed that bullet. it pierced only part of -- pierced only part of her skull. they are describing him as alight skinned man 5'7" with a medium build.
